About Me

I ran my first marathon on a whim in 2002 and immediately became hooked on distance running and the running community. Since that first marathon I have run over 80 marathons/ ultras, winning 50 of them. I love all types of race courses – from flat roads to mountainous and technical trails, and I’ve competed at distances ranging from the half marathon (1:17:42 PR) to 100 miles (16:47:19 PR). My personal racing highlights include two IAU World 100km wins (2010 and 2014), two Western States 100 mile wins (including the still standing course record, 2012) and a win at South Africa’s Comrades 89km (the worlds largest and oldest ultra, 2014). I was fortunate to be awarded Ultrarunner of the Year in 2011, 2012 and 2014. In 2014 I became a full time online coach, focusing on ultra distances, as I love to share my wisdom and experience to help runners enjoy and achieve the most of their running journey. I’m passionate about the sport of trail and ultra running, so as a coach I want to share that passion to allow runners to train smartly and have fun, so they remain runners for life.

Patience, perseverance and positivity, always!

My Coaching Style / Methodology

My coaching is personalized. I aim to be an effective coach through a strong knowledge of the the science of running and established training principles, and apply that knowledge to individuals, taking into account their background and lifestyle. No one training plan works for everyone. Whilst many of us would love to train like a pro and follow a textbook ‘perfect’ plan, the perfect plan is the one that takes into account your athletic background, your family and work commitments and your long term running goals – a plan crafted and adapted over time just for you. I enjoy getting to know my athletes as people, as by doing so only then can I be the most effective coach. I appreciate that handing your running over to a coach takes trust and I don’t take that trust lightly. You can expect an initial video call so we can get to know one another, a regularly updated and adjusted training plan, regular email and video call contact, as well as guidance with race planning and goal setting.
