The day is finally here! It’s been hard to keep this one a secret.

I spend all day…every day, corresponding with women about a cornucopia of topics. You name it, and I’ve probably had a discussion about it. With this experience, I’ve learned more about women than I thought was possible (and that is coming from a woman), our different ways of life, various issues, and how we are affected by societal trends (and the effect we can have on those trends).

There are many reoccurring topics, and a biggie is the effect and role of motherhood on women. Issues stretch from physical and psychological changes to new financial and time management obstacles.

Another popular topic that pops up is the lack of women’s participation in outdoor sports. There are multiple conversations presenting or arguing the reasons for this, and as you may have already guessed, motherhood comes in near the top of the list.

Part of the TS mission is to grow womxn’s participation and opportunity. Seeing how mothers especially, may have more trouble participating or taking advantage of an opportunity, well we wanted to do something about it.

On an exploratory call with The North Face’s Esther Kendall, she expressed the desire and need to address issues mother athletes face within sports. We probably spent a solid hour talking about the roadblocks mothers tackle, and how we were amazed that there isn’t much aid or protocol to help.

From there, the Childcare Grant was born.

Each quarter, Trail Sisters and The North Face will provide six mothers with $150 (and some goodies) to put towards anything that will help them get out the door for some well-deserved and needed “me time.” Examples include, a mom could use that $150 to hire the next-door neighbor to watch her child, or she could purchase a child carrier so that the child could come with.

This will allow us to help 24 moms throughout the year, but we’d like to go above and beyond, and with your help! We are offering the option for anyone to donate to this grant, and The North Face has generously committed to matching an additional $500 per quarter! This means more grants for more moms!

Any and all moms are invited to apply for a $150 grant (must reside in the USA). We just ask that you fill out a short form so that we can learn more about you.

We understand that this doesn’t solve any overarching issues, and that it’s not a life-changing amount of money, but we hope this grant can aid moms in a special experience, and that it can bring awareness and motivation to other organizations and businesses to do more for mothers.

A special thanks to both Esther Kendall and The North Face for their support, progressive approach, and for their appreciation of mothers.

  1. Love this!! Is there any way for race companies to contribute matching funds as well? TS could become a centralized place for that to happen, instead of each of us having to come up with our own programs. I know we would be interested!
