2,021 Hours for the Planet, Wrapped Up

Gina has always been stubborn and bold, so when it came to advocating for women’s rights and equality in the outdoors, she was bound to make some changes. As the founder of Trail Sisters, Gina’s goal is to help create opportunities and grow participation in women’s trail running. Gina is also a professional ultra trail runner, and when she’s not on the trails logging miles, she’s most likely trying to potty train her new Airedale pup, Ezra.

In honor of Earth Month we wanted to do some special, putting the pressure on more trail clean-up and trail maintenance. Many organizations and trail enthusiasts look after the Earth with daily trail care, but the reality is, most of us are only able to commit a certain amount of time and energy. We partnered with Altra Running to create our 2,021 Hours for the Planet project, bringing awareness and encouraging commitment in providing aid to our trails.

Our goal was to hit 2,021 hours of collective trail work throughout the month of April. We knew it could be a stretch, but there is nothing wrong with setting big goals. In fact, big goals are the key to pushing past previously assumed potential limits! Throughout the month of April, we collectively hit 1,253 hours of trail clean-up and maintenance, 62% of our goal. We are super proud of the work that was done and give kudos to everyone who pitched in and contributed! We may not have hit 2,021 hours, but we were able to encourage and produce 1,253 hours of trail care that may not have happened otherwise!

Additionally, we received lots of trail organization submissions which we are curating into a listing within our Resource “hub”. This resource will aid folks searching for volunteer opportunities within their local areas (and nationally).

There are many conclusions a person could create in regards to this project, but what we see is the opportunity for more growth and dedication to trail work projects. Though the month of April is complete, that doesn’t mean we can’t commit to trail clean-up and maintenance all throughout the year. We were able to encourage 1,253 hours of dedication in one month, and are pretty sure a bulk of that effort will continue repeatedly each month of the year. Once a person sees and realizes the difference they can make, that person often continues wanting to make a difference…it’s contagious!

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped us reach 1,253 hours of trail goodness! Thank you to Altra for their partnership and their passion to create a healthier outdoor playground! And thank you all in advance, for your continued effort in picking up trash on your future runs or hikes, and for volunteering with your local organizations for trail work! Let’s keep at it!
